Human representation and the cheapness of the modern selfie

Monira Al Qadiri currently is a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.

Upcoming Tuesday the Kunstfort organizes ”FACE”, a special lecture performance by Al Qadiri in which she merges past and future, ritual and technology in the alienating surroundings of Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen.

In the digital age we live in, are representations of the human face deemed as precious as they used to be? In ”FACE”, Monira Al Qadiri explores this essential question by focusing on religious public murals in her native Kuwait, that she researched for many years and developed into a large-scale video installation titled ”Muhawwil” (Transformer). Questions about idolatry and sanctity, human representation, and the cheapness of the modern selfie are all explored in this mysterious, contemplative analogy.

Monira Al Qadiri is a Kuwaiti visual artist born in Senegal and educated in Japan. In 2010, she received a Ph.D. in inter-media art from Tokyo University of the Arts, where her research was focused on the aesthetics of sadness in the Middle-East stemming from poetry, music, art and religious practices. Her work explores unconventional gender identities, petro-cultures and their possible futures, as well as the legacies of corruption. She is also a founding member of the artist collective GCC.
