Every year, the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) organizes the Cosmos Weeks, a course in which 2nd-year Spatial, Fashion and Product Design students gain work-field experience. During this period, students choose from a number of projects presented by different organizations. Kunstfort Vijfhuizen is also taking part this year, inviting students to create works with an expiration date.
In a world of art that often focuses on preserving and extending the life of artworks for museums and art markets, we encourage students to think about what it means to make work that is not meant to exist forever. How does this change the meaning of the work? How does it affect the choice of materials and the way the work is presented to an audience? As a maker, how would you want people to remember the work?
The assignment provides space for material experimentation, while also encouraging students to think creatively about performances or interventions that actively engage audiences. They can also choose to share their creative process.
We will start the kick-off on April 17, where students can get their first inspiration. The results will be on display starting Thursday, June 5, and the final public presentation is scheduled for Sunday, June 8.
