The scuffle of the cuddle cage
01.03–31.05.2026
Return to overview

Central in The scuffle of the cuddle cage is the position of women in a male-dominated world. Where lies the balance between going along with the system of dominance, questioning it, and challenging it? How can a woman prevent becoming alienated from herself in a society built on male norms? The constraints she faces are imposed and limiting, yet at the same time function as a ‘self-chosen’ strategy of defense. Many a cage also serves as a safe and familiar space for healing and recharging, or as a sturdy armour from which the system can be confronted again with renewed determination.

The concrete Fort at Vijfhuizen was originally built as a military site of (male) protection and defense. The scuffle of the cuddle cage fills it with artistic perspectives on the state of women—full of colorful indignation and dark humor, pushing boundaries of pain while offering a glimmer of hope.
