What if art was never meant to last forever?
Ideally, a work of art is preserved for eternity. But what happens when it is allowed to decay? Does it lose its value, or does it become something new? In the art world, enormous amounts of energy and money are spent keeping artworks alive. But do we really need to preserve art forever? What if we let it decay, or even destroy it on purpose?
In the coming months, Kunstfort will reflect on these questions with a programme that pays tribute to impermanence. Under the title We are woven to an end, the exhibition will grow as artworks are slowly added and ritually removed, creating a collection that expands and eventually disappears. Artworks will be shown for the very last time before disappearing in a ritual farewell. Sometimes painful, sometimes liberating.
We say goodbye to artworks, but also to the thoughts and habits that keep us trapped. And we invite everyone to take part.
What are you ready to let go of?
The first work in this exhibition is a series of sculptures by Mexican artist Dodi Espinosa.
